Types of Steel Materials

As the foundation of heavy equipment, tools, and household items steel plays a crucial role in manufacturing and construction. All steel is not created equal. The type of steel that you select can affect the strength and durability of a project.

The quantity of impurities, or additions determines the classification. This is what makes each steel unique to a particular application.

Low-carbon steels are among the most common types of steel used by metal fabricators and they are available in a variety of forms. They can be found in beams, pipes and other structural components. They are also ideal for welding fabrications because they can be easily shaped and formed without losing their strength or quality.

Medium-carbon steels contain less than 1.75% carbon content and are renowned for their toughness. They’re a top choice for knives, cookware and other tools that last. Also, they’re used in the manufacture of car parts and other mechanical equipment.

High-carbon steels are used in parts that require strong strength and resistance to corrosion. These include anchor bolts, tools and rods.

Alloy steels offer a wide variety of properties that can be modified to meet the demands of each use. For instance, tungsten improves the strength at high temperatures and wear resistance of high-strength steels. Chromium improves the ductility and strength of stainless steels and raises their heat resistance. Molybdenum on is the other hand, increases the hardness and toughness of alloy steels.
